Shanti Stupa is a symbol of the Buddha's teachings. There are Buddha's relics, Dharma texts and images sealed inside for the benefit of future generations.

Construction of Shanti Stupa in Leh, Ladakh started in 1983 under the direction of Bhikshu Nakamura Gyomyo. The temple was inaugurated in 1985 by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, while the stupa itself was inaugurated in 1991. Bhikshu Nakamura Gyomyo supervised the work without the aid of a contractor, though both the central and state governments supported his work. The PM of India at the time Mrs. Indira Gandhi donated funds for the construction of the road leading up to Shanti Stupa. The Defence Ministry provided construction materials and the state government provided timber. Members of the Ladakhi Buddhist community also voluntarily worked on the project.

Japanese and Indian peoples both contributed financial support for the construction of the monument.

Bhikshu Nakamura Gyomyo came to India in 1976 and arrived in Ladakh in 1979. The Buddhist community of Ladakh asked him to plan and construct Shanti Stupa.

Ladakh Shanti Stupa is a symbol of peace, unity and the Buddha's teachings.
